Benny Chan, President of the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design, was invited by the Structural Branch of the GUANGDONG ENGINEERING EXPLORATION & DESIGN ASSOCIATION to attend the 4th Greater Bay Area Young Structural Engineers Innovation Exchange Conference held in Hengqin, on 12 June.
In his opening remarks, Benny encouraged young structural engineers to get hold of the opportunities brought by AI, and enhance their professional competitiveness so that they can “go global” to broaden their international horizons, in line with the national Belt and Road Initiative.
Structural design is often seen as the most routine, and even somewhat tedious and boring part of project design. However, in the foreseeable future, AI will handle most of such tedious and mundane work. It will allow structural engineers more time to focus their energy on conceiving more innovative structural designs, as well as collaboration with multi-disciplinary professionals from all cities in the Greater Bay Area, including urban designers, to enhance the overall international competitiveness of urban development professionals in the Greater Bay Area.
