As part of the pre-conference programme for the HKIUD Urban Design Conference 2025, themed “Happiness and Well-being in Urban Design: Shaping a Joyful City”, the Public Affairs Committee, in collaboration with the Harbourfront Commission, hosted a design workshop entitled “Harbourfront Enjoyment” on 22 November 2025.
The workshop gathered members of the Harbourfront Commission, faculty and students from Hong Kong’s Master of Urban Design programmes, and members of the Institute. Participants were divided into four groups, each focusing on a distinct site along Victoria Harbour: Hunghom Bay, Kennedy Town New Praya, Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter, and To Kwu Wan. A common challenge identified across these locations was the restriction of pedestrian movement.
Nearly 30 participants actively contributed to the exercise, generating a wealth of creative and forward-thinking design concepts aimed at enhancing accessibility and enjoyment along the harbourfront. The event was honoured by the presence of Ms. Doris Ho, Permanent Secretary for Development, and Mr. Ivan Ho, Chairman of the Harbourfront Commission, who delivered opening remarks to inspire participants before the commencement of the workshop.
This collaborative initiative exemplifies the spirit of the upcoming Urban Design Conference, reinforcing the importance of inclusive, people-oriented design in shaping a joyful and sustainable city. The ideas generated during the workshop will serve as valuable references for future harbourfront enhancement projects, contributing to Hong Kong’s vision of creating vibrant, accessible, and enjoyable public spaces for all.
