Views from the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design on the endorsement by the Executive Council on Elderly Services Programme Plan (ESPP):

(Hong Kong, 29 June 2017) The Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design would like to put forth the following views on the endorsement by the Executive Council on Elderly Services Programme Plan (ESPP) on 27 June 2017.

We welcome Government's timely action and direction, especially in view of the rapidly increasing elderly population.

Whilst we consider it is certainly essential in terms of equity, to provide supporting services to the elderly who are in need, HKIUD further suggests that our urban environment should be conducive to walkability, legibility, comfort and safety in order to postpone health and social problems associated with ageing.  When the elderly population becomes more mobile, they would be able to live more actively and healthily in an inclusive and smart setting. The need for medical and social care will also thereby be reduced.  We are confident that the Government will take a lead, as well as encourage the private sector to jointly create an age-friendly urban environment both in its new towns and in the redevelopment of the old urban areas.  HKIUD will do its best to collaborate with Government and other experts and stakeholders in meeting this end.

HKIUD has started our efforts working with other experts and institutions in studying what we should do to achieve an Age-Friendly and Inclusive urban environment.  We will consolidate our findings, and share with concerned parties in a biennial conference early next year. We welcome any suggestions and collaborations from Government, the Industry, Academics, and Research institutes. Our website is: www.hkiud.org
