We are pleased to announce the formation of a new professional institute, the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design (HKIUD) which was successfully launched on June 17, 2010 at the FCC. The event was well received and participated by over 150 members and guests. The Secretary for Development Mrs. Carrie Lam, GBS, JP was the Guest of Honour who officiated the Inaugural Launch and showed the Government's support to the new Institute which would be represented in the newly formed Harbourfront Commission. The First General Council of the Institute consists of Prof. Bernard V. Lim, JP (President), Dr. Sujata S. Govada (Vice President of International Relations), Dr. Peter Cookson Smith (Vice President of Professional Development) and Mr. Vincent Ng (Vice President of Local Policies), Prof. John Ng (Hon. Secretary) and Mr. Charles Li (Hon. Treasurer). Mr. Stephen Tang, Mr. Ivan Ho, and Mr. Bernie Harrad are the Council Members; Dr. Mee Kam Ng of HKU and Prof. Hendrik Tieben of CUHK are the Academic Advisors.

The formation of HKIUD has been under discussion and planning for some time, and reflects the commitment of its founding members with the following objectives.

  • To promote urban design excellence in education, research and practice
  • To promote education and research in urban design
  • To establish professional qualifications for urban designers
  • To accredit the urban design curriculum of university courses
  • To create a platform for information sharing on urban design issues in Hong Kong and the region
  • To strengthen the communication between urban designers
  • To promote continuing professional development of urban designers
  • To promote urban design standards and services
  • To promote the community’s awareness of the value and need of urban design
