Business of Design Week - Detour 2014: Sweden Architect Round Table Special Programme on 4 December 2014

Mr. Charles Li, Vice President (External Affairs) was invited to be a guest of the Business of Design Week - Detour 2014: Sweden Architect Round Table Special Programme on 4 December 2014. A group of Swedish and Hong Kong architects were gathered in PMQ taste library for a food workshop. The purpose was to share experiences and expertise, establish relationships and build future collaborations in joint issues. The topic that had been discussed was design for sustainability and how to achieve a more people-friendly and inviting environment, where you put the person in center.

Meeting with MScUD, CUHK and MUD, HKU Students

On 12 November 2014 and 18 November 2014, Membership and Education Committee members together with Mr. Kelvin Leung, Council Member and Ms. Canny Ma met with Master of Science in Urban Design Students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Master of Urban Design Students from University of Hong Kong, and briefed them on the establishment and work of the Institute and the career path of Urban Designers in Hong Kong.

EURAU 2014 Composite Cities Symposium

Mr. Charles Li, Vice President (External Affairs) attended the EURAU 2014 Composite Cities Symposium held in Istanbul, Turkey, 12-14 November 2014.

Stemming from the urge to critically discuss the ‘today and tomorrow’ of cities worldwide, the symposium was themed: “Composite Cities”, referring to the complexity of cities; ever increasing through new urban emergences adding up to the existing urban environment and continuously redefining our urban experience. The conference has created a medium to discuss the complex relationship between urban form and urban experience through the 4 characters below:

Hybrid City – urban conditions emerging through the interaction of distinct entities politically, culturally or socially.

Morphed City – urban transformation as a manifestation of global economic and political conjuncture resulting in a worldwide urban homogeneity.

Fragmented City - urban conditions and experience emerging as a reflection of social disintegration resulting from significant cultural, economic, political, occupational etc.

Mutated City - changes under a multitude of forces on city space from economic, political, social factors to wars and natural phenomena as earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes.

The Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design (HKIUD) Urban Design Awards 2014 aims at recognising urban design related projects with outstanding performance and contributions in promoting excellence in Urban Design. The awards has divided into Built Project and Plan / Concept categories.

Total of 34 submissions were received. The adjudication was held on 19 August 2014 and Jury Panel included: Mr. Nicholas Brooke, Prof. Leslie Chen, Prof. Puay-Peng Ho, Hon. Wai Kwok Lo and Prof. Chris Webster. The Award Presentation was held on 16 September 2014. Prizes were presented by Mrs. Carrie Lam, Chief Secretary for Administration of Hong Kong Government and Prof. Chris Webster, Dean of Faculty of Architecture, HKU. Guests, Awardees and HKIUD Members shared their views in Urban Design in the event.
