Cultural History Mapping Workshop: Central & Sham Shui Po

Since 2019, ISU has been working on the Smart Cultural Precinct @Central (SCP), a comprehensive, conservation place-making initiative involving participation from the community, academia, public and private sectors to create a vibrant and interconnected cultural precinct in the heart of the historic Central District. At the core of SCP is the Cultural Triangle formed by three historic landmarks, Police Married Quarters (PMQ), Central Police Station (Tai Kwun) and Central Market. The Cultural Triangle was coined in 2009 when UDP International worked on the adaptive reuse concept of PMQ for a private developer.

Currently, ISU, along with university students and recent graduates from Hong Kong and the U.S., is working on Cultural History Mapping projects in Central and Sham Shui Po to better understand the historical, cultural, spatial, and social dynamics of the areas.

The Mapping of Central will contribute to the development of the Smart Cultural Precinct (SCP) in Central by painting a comprehensive picture of place and community through a bottom-up approach, thereby informing revitalization initiatives that will conserve the area’s rich cultural heritage and strengthen its place identity.

The Cultural History Mapping Workshop is a pivotal step in capturing the diverse narratives and experiences of local residents. Please register here if you are interested in participating and kindly share this event within your networks. Additionally, we are eager to explore potential collaboration opportunities in the future if you think your institute would benefit from our work.

Finally, we would appreciate it if you could participate in the surveys for both Central and Sham Shui Po projects. Please see links to the surveys below and the attached Workshop flyer for your information.
